We were instantly drawn to Susan Brown’s romantic and feminine paintings – they are a natural fit with so much of our furniture, and we are thrilled to be able to expose her work to our Layla Grayce customers. Susan fuses her passion for painting, making music and writing to create floral paintings crafted with a sense of poetry and joyful exuberance. Inspired by her vision and the fabulous vintage collages we enjoy on her blog, we asked Susan to share her artistic point of view.
What inspires your painting?
When I first started painting, most of my inspiration came from the gorgeous homes found in decorator magazines. I love interior design and would use the palettes in the magazines to guide me. Textiles have always been and inspiration as well. I began my career painting roses on old furniture and gradually transitioned into art for walls. The large, loose “chunky” roses came about after many years of painting.
What is the most challenging part about running your company?
Time management is definitely the area I find most challenging. Balancing how much time to spend marketing and how much time to spend painting, as well time spent looking for inspiration and living my life.
How would you describe your personal style?
I use the term “Bohemian Romance” to describe what I do, how I live, etc. For me this is a sort of broad way of summing up the many facets of my work which include my music, painting and the journey I’m on.
How do your designs and subject matters evolve?
There are still so many subjects I want to explore, and I’m not sure how or why a particular subject will appeal to me. Feminine themes definitely seem to find their way into my painting. I continue to be inspired by the evolving design trends. If I see something that catches my eye, I incorporate it into my work while staying true to my style. Another challenge for me is to not let the commercial aspects of working as an artist dictate the direction I may be inclined to go in. For instance the majority of my work has been the floral paintings although I am feeling drawn to spend some time exploring abstract impressionism.
Do you have a favorite blog that inspires you?
There are so many visually gorgeous blogs out there today! I honestly don’t have a favorite. They are all praiseworthy endeavors. Considering my lack of discipline when it comes to time management, I could really get lost browsing the blog scene.
