Let’s face it, kids can sometimes be… temperamental? Opinionated when it comes to what to wear in the morning? Stubborn about dressing appropriately for the weather? Yes, yes and yes! But thankfully it’s BabyLegs to the rescue. Instead of spending the morning arguing about shorts or pants, sundresses or long sleeves, simply give them their choice of BabyLegs to layer on however and wherever they want. Legs or arms, legs and arms both? Hey, as long as they’re not going to freeze their little cans off, we’re thrilled to have one less battle to wage in the morning. Shop new Baby Legs >

Bling in the New Year party gifts for each guest (photo: Karen Forsythe)

Skipping right past the Easy Bake oven stage, stylist and pastry chef Julia Usher has been wowing both the eye and the palate with her sophisticated and tasty endeavors ever since childhood. Her work has been celebrated by Bon Appétit, nearly every national bridal magazine and Vera Wang on Weddings, and Julia’s sweet tooth satisfying recipes are abundant on her blog as well as in her award-winning book Cookie Swap: Creative Treats to Share Throughout the Year. Julia’s here to give us a taste of the “sweet life.”

What’s your best tip for making guests’ eyes light up when entertaining?
Guests love to know you care and they also love the unexpected – at least when it comes in small and pleasant doses! There is no better way to say you care than by taking the time to make something special, and ideally personalized, for each guest. This something could be as simple as a handmade menu at each place setting, a hand-delivered invitation, the evening’s recipes bound into a booklet and given as a favor, or a specially wrapped gift, such as those I bedazzled with vintage jewelry for my “Bling in the New Year”, a dessert party styled for St. Louis AT HOME magazine.

The unexpected comes into play by working unusual elements into traditional party accoutrements. For instance, I’ve been known to make place cards from cookies, menus from recycled postcards and magazines, placemats from collages of guests’ photos, even table runners from pages of guests’ old yearbooks. I also like to forego the same-old floral centerpiece and mix things up a bit. At my New Year’s party, I played up the sweetness of the dessert table with gilded sticks decked with rock candy. Even small, inexpensive surprises can have a lasting ah-ha effect.

Give us a peek into your style obsessions, faves, inspirations and guilty pleasures!

  • Favorite party you’ve styled: “Bling in the New Year” where my dining room served as a focal point. Swathed in my signature colors of green with accents of tarnished bronze or gold for a hit of elegance, the room is filled with eclectic antiques that all work together because they share a common theme: each has survived decades to tell a story, conveying a sense of purpose and past.
  • Favorite cookie you’ve made: For their looks, I’d choose my cookie place cards from my upcoming book, Julia M. Usher’s Ultimate Cookies. For their wonderful interplay of textures (chewy, crunchy, and gooey, all at once), I’d choose my Gingersnap Thumbprint Cookies.
  • Favorite cake you’ve made: A cake I made for a small, intimate wedding. Its romantic styling really resonated with me, plus it was as tasty as it looked (kudos to my bakery staff at the time). The inside was a rustic pear-almond cake layered with almond dacquoise, cream cheese filling, and sliced poached pear (shown above).
  • Favorite Layla Grayce items you’d want in your home: Louis Tufted Chaise and Currey & Co Belmonte Wall Sconce
  • Signature fashion item: Vintage jewelry, especially pieces with elaborate filigree or other metal work.
  • I cannot live without: First, my husband Bryan; then my work (baking and decorating, and writing about them); and then coffee – and definitely in this order!
  • My favorite place on earth: Stonington, Maine, where I have a home away from my St. Louis home. The views of the harbor are breathtaking. It’s the only place in the world that can put me completely at peace.
  • My guilty pleasures: A sugary donut (or two) in the morning; pillows (I have not one or two, but upwards of 13 on each bed); Facebook and Twitter (some would say I’m addicted).
  • A superpower I would love to have: The ability to be in more than one place at a time. There are never enough hours in the day to do all I want!

Authentic vintage finds were once the culmination of serious scouring and restoration efforts or a lucky inheritance. Our new One of a Kind collection of French and European style antiques changes all that, offering the time worn look and feel of furniture passed down through the years. Thoughtfully restored to their former glory, tables and mirrors boast decorative carvings, gilding and distressed patina finishes, while arm chairs, sofas and settees are clothed in burlap backings, original blue velvet or newly upholstered neutrals. Long live the relatives, your next heirloom can be found in this treasure trove.

Personalized canvas wall letters
Personalized canvas wall letters
T-R-O-U-B-L-E is sometimes how we spell the mischievous antics of our little angels, though usually we find them S-W-E-E-T. No matter how you spell your child’s personality, we’ve got a new way to put the writing on the wall. Mix and match these gallery-wrapped canvas monograms in patterns ranging from playful polka dots to stylish stripes to preppy plaid. Personalize their bedroom with initials or a name, or have some fun with words like “giggles” in a playroom, “bubbles” in the bath or “dream” over the bed. What word spells your child’s personality? Catherine Fitzsimmons of Rikshaw Design has a knack for designing charming prints that bring a Bohemian flair to both home decor and apparel. A spontaneous adventurer, Catherine first became captivated by the tradition of block-printing while visiting India. “Watching the Indian artisans create gorgeous block printed textiles in person left me mesmerized”, says Catherine. “I fell in love with the imperfections of a block print, the saturated colors, and the true artistry and dedication that it takes to finish just one meter of fabric. I instantly knew that I wanted to incorporate those techniques with my design sensibility for pattern and color, to create a line that would be loved both by the child as well as the parent. While our customers might first be drawn in by the prints and color palette, they are won over by our quality- each piece is soft, comfortable, and truly get better with age.” Catherine created Rikshaw Design in 2008 and we are thrilled to offer her Bohemian inspired collection of bedding for the crib and home, children’s accessories and clothing.

What’s your best tip for bringing the boho vibe into our decor and homes?
My best tip is there aren’t any rules! Mix old with new, layer patterns and textures and make sure it has a relaxed, comfortable feel.

Give us a peek into your style obsessions, faves, inspirations and guilty pleasures!

  • Signature colors: For interiors I love a pop of orange and hot pink, but I generally wear cool colors like greens and blues.
  • Favorite Rikshaw design: I love the new children’s romper, it’s too cute for words! And I am also really pleased with the new prints for our women’s kurtas this year.
  • Favorite Layla Grayce items you’d want in your home: Arteriors Jarrod Carved Wood and Mirror Pendant and the Bungalow 5 Jacqui Console Table
  • Favorite coffee table books: Rajasthan by Pauline Van Lynden is a beauty… full of beautiful Indian color!
  • Signature fashion look: Tucker blouse, Ernest Sewn jeans, fun strappy gladiator heels from J. Crew.
  • Favorite beauty product: Moroccan oil – gives me the perfect beach hair.
  • I cannot live without: My dog Jumby.
  • My favorite place on earth: I am not sure I have been there yet, but a white sandy beach with nothing to do but stare out at turquoise water is pretty amazing.
  • My favorite guilty pleasures: Bubble baths and reality tv.
  • A superpower I would love to have: To be able to time travel!

Instead we’ve come up with a few stylish ways to work green into your attire this Thursday. From head to toe and everything in between, we’re sharing some of our favorite green accessories and attire. Keep an eye out for lucky leprechauns too (since having a little gold to accent your green would be a lovely thing!)

Every new collection of Tralala has us oohing and aahing, snapping up new things for our little girls or fantasizing what we’d choose if only we had a little girl (because let’s face it, rarely do little boys delight, dance and prance in new clothes like moms and daughters do). The colors this month are a celebration of Spring, the prints an ode to mod florals with a dash of toile for just the right touch of French joie de vivre. Shop the newest arrivals from Tralala >
