“How do I choose the best area rug?” We hear this so often, we wanted to offer up our advice (and some selections we love!) to make each room feel homey, centered, and pulled together. Here’s our round-up using the 3 key factors for choosing the perfect area rug for your room or space: size, texture, and style.
First and foremost, size up your room to figure out the dimensions that’s right for the space. Measure two feet out from the wall on all sides, and that’s your starting point. If you’re working with more of an open concept, start two feet out from the sectioned off area. Either way, two feet of space is the golden rule.
Next, think about the furniture that will go in the space. Ideally, all furniture would be on the rug, but the front legs of a table, chair, or couch should be on the rug. This frames the room while protecting hardwood floors that are easily scratched.
We love the natural Jaipur Sanibe style and the fact that there are many sizes to choose from, makes it a solid choice for most any room.
Take your time with this important step as returns happen most when you get a rug that’s too small for your space!

Next, we’ll lay a solid foundation by picking the right texture of the rug. Will the rug be placed in a high traffic area? If so, we recommend jute or sisal (like this one by Dash & Albert!) for extreme durability. Synthetic rugs are also great in high traffic areas! If you’re looking for texture that is more plush, a wool or shag rug could be for you. Keep in mind, though, with thicket texture rugs like these, you’ll need to be lighter on your feet than with a flatter rug, such as a berber. A good middle ground is Cotton rugs, as they are easy to clean and durable.
Also at this stage, start thinking about your furniture texture and what overall look you want to achieve in the room. You can create appealing contrast by balancing smooth textures like leather with a shag rug, or a cotton couch with a jute rug. No matter what you choose, texture adds intrigue and interest to a room, so be bold!

Now that you’ve narrowed down to the size and texture you’re looking for, it’s time to focus on the visual impact within the space, aka the style.
For color, we suggest choosing a palette for the room to ensure the hues work well together. A rug is usually one of the largest elements in the room and can either support a show-stopping piece of furniture, or be the focal point itself with an interesting pattern or design. Light colors work in small spaces to make rooms appear bigger, while dark colors create a sense of intimacy in a grander arena. Muted, neutral colors (like this jute rug!) can also create a relaxing, tranquil vibe while color (we love this patterened one!) energizes the space.
Be thinking about the overall theme of your room as well. See the sand from your window at a nautical beachside cottage? A jute rug lays the perfect foundation for navy, white, and cottage accents. See the city skyline instead? An oriental rug may tie the space together with statement-making glamour.
