Atlanta-based designer Phoebe Howard’s aesthetic is quintessentially Southern, comfortable, timeless and elegant. Howard is known for her fresh take on traditional style, which is evident in the many of her projects. These are a few of our favorites.
One thing that remains consistent throughout Howard’s work is her masterful use of neutral color palettes. Her work also illustrates the power of symmetry, as seen in this bedroom, which creates a sense of order and formality.
Howard’s expertise extends to choosing and placing accessories. On a coffee table, Howard opts for a well-edited selection of just three glass jugs, a stack of coffee table books and bit of greenery for freshness. Well placed lamps, chandeliers and sconces add plenty of light options throughout her interiors.
Plush seating areas are a telltale mark of Howard’s work, seen below in the form of a cozy nap-inducing chaise boasting two soft pillows and a throw.

Howard’s advice for pillows on a sofa? Mix and match fabrics and limit patterned fabrics to one set of pillows per sofa. Also, start from the outside with two larger pillows and work your way in, throwing in an odd shape to keep the look from feeling too symmetrical.
Six pieces of framed art are the focal point in a smaller seating area (below right), equipped with a sofa, two upholstered chairs and a small bench for guests to pull up a seat and chat. In another larger seating area, complete with a chaise, the focus is kept on the view outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Howard took a risk by placing a bed in the center of the bedroom, but it paid dividends. Just look at this gorgeous space! Not only did this choice help with traffic flow to all corners of the room, it also allows the homeowner to peer through the French doors to the views outside each morning.
Notice anything in particular about these two spaces? In the living room, a painting above the sofa serves as the room’s artwork, while the walls themselves are the art in the bedroom, featuring a mural that creates the perfect backdrop for this beautiful space.
