Kate Landers here to share with you some fabulous celebration inspiration from a fellow party designer and stylist, Kara Allen of Kara’s Party Ideas. While the party was a luncheon celebrating her son’s baptism, I find it provides terrific ideas for bridal and baby showers, anniversary and birthday parties, as well as any special holiday family gatherings!

First, a brief introduction to Kara. She is a well-known event planner and stylist, author, crafter and online party supply shop owner. Kara is most recognized for her leading party showcase blog, Kara’s Party Ideas, which offers recipes, tutorials and of course party inspiration!

I recently interviewed Kara about her son’s beautiful baptism celebration. I am thrilled to share some great ideas from her party that you can incorporate into your upcoming event.

  1. How to get a “rustic chic” look for your event:
  2. It’s all about textures and colors. Kara shares that she used a variety of textures at her party like ruffled burlap, linen, wood, wire, milk glass and galvanized metal. She opted for a tan, brown, chalky black and soft white color scheme to keep it both masculine and delicate at once.

  3. Party details to note:
  4. Kara is all about details. One of her favorite elements from the party were the wooden tags she hand-stamped with her son’s name. Use of twine, tags, dried flowers, mini burlap sacks and ribbon added a lot of style to the celebration. She also used photos of the guest of honor as décor throughout the party and displayed each in a rustic-style frame.

  5. Simplified dessert table:
  6. This is one of my favorite elements of this event. Kara points out that large dessert tables can be overwhelming, and a simple milk and cookies table is equally darling and much simpler to create.

She used a large, vintage wooden spool as the tabletop (I love that) and filled rustic glass jars with a variety of cookies. Kraft favor boxes and bags were displayed on shelves to serve as decoration and to provide easy access. Mini milk bottles were placed on ice in a large galvanized bucket next to the table for guests to grab on their way home.

  7. Chalkboard elements keep it very on-trend:
  8. Kara used a chalkboard-style invitation and printed goods throughout her party. This is a very hot trend in events at the moment, and matches the rustic chic style perfectly. Note she also used chalkboard-inspired signs, banners, subway prints and numbers, which showcase the many ways to incorporate this trend into your event.

  9. Kara’s Party Tip:
  10. I asked Kara for her party tips based on this event, and she shared this fabulous one that I cannot wait to incorporate in my next event:

Store and display food (such as salads) in large, clear glass lidded jars. This makes for a clean look, keeps food fresh and helps protect it from any pesky bugs! You can tie chalkboard tags around the neck of the jars with twine, labeling what is in each jar and making them that much more stylish.

A tremendous thank you to Kara for allowing us to debut her beautiful event here on Layla Grayce!

Working in the high-end stationery industry together, the bride Jessica and I often helped brides and their families design extraordinary invitations for their weddings and the surrounding festivities. Jess and I would dream of what we envisioned for our events when the time came for us to say our “I Do’s”. I always told Jess that I wanted to throw her one darling bridal shower. Fast-forward a decade, and I finally had my chance to make good on my promise! I could not have been more delighted to do so.

She was going for an overall “rustic” feel, so I incorporated a whitewashed wood backdrop and large wooden crate with rope handles as the centerpiece of the dining table. A simple pink heart served as the symbol of love, keeping a romantic feel at the event.

It thrills me to share a few shower details with you. Please use these notes as inspiration for your bridal shower, engagement party or day-after-wedding brunch!

  1. Color Scheme: Using the color scheme of the wedding is a great way to tie in pre and post-wedding events to the Big Day. This is certainly not a requirement, but in my case, I loved Jess’ pink and gray color-scheme, and decided to use it for the bridal shower as well. Feel free to throw in an additional color, like a pop of gold or mint green, to make the colors of your event unique and current, all while honoring the bride and groom’s chosen colors.
  2. Theme: Bridal shower themes do not need to be highly detailed and elaborate. Knowing Jess wanted a rustic yet romantic look for her wedding, I chose a simple pink heart for the romantic element and whitewashed wood (for backdrop and centerpiece) for something rustic. Thematic elements can be incorporated through the invitation and printed designs, as well as in the desserts and hanging decor.
  3. Menu: A bridal tea was my initial plan, but Jess doesn’t like tea or traditional cake, so I decided I needed to come up with something unique that Jess would love. I opted for an afternoon of “Sips and Sweets”, which turned out to be just perfect. A mid-afternoon shower does not call for a large meal, and so I served fresh fruit kabobs, lots of iced summer beverages and several desserts (including the bride’s favorite, cupcakes!) for guests to nibble on while doting on the bride.
  4. Activities: We had a very small, intimate lingerie shower, which kept the gift-opening portion of the shower short and sweet. I had all of the guests hold up their lingerie gifts and pose in a group photo at the end. It was just hysterical, and I highly recommend it. My grandmother threw me a lingerie shower (yes, it’s true!), and when we had her and her “golden girls” hold up their lacy and racy gifts, it was a photo to always remember. We also played a “How Well Do You Know Jess?” game, which is lots of fun for the bride and guests alike, and Bridal Shower Bingo. Having a couple simple, optional activities can be surprisingly fun and create an afternoon full of laughs.
  5. Party Favors: Guests enjoyed fresh cotton candy (made and shipped just 24 hours before the shower!) as their take-home treat and little gable boxes to fill with sweet treats from the dessert table. I always recommend edible favors because they are often greatly appreciated by the guests. And if your guests are headed to a night on the town for a bachelorette party after the shower (as mine were), these sweets are much-appreciated treats throughout the night!

Two of my favorite trends in fashion, graphic and interior design right now are watercolor prints and citrus hues. The fluidity of watercolor fabrics give each piece so much movement. The perfectly imperfect brush strokes in watercolor design gives a casual yet stunning feel, which I adore. Citrus fruit designs are fresh and scream “summer”, while citrus hues cast a warm glow that brightens any room year-round.

It was a delight to design this watercolor citrus dessert table as inspiration for your summer soirees. I love this motif for a bridal or baby shower, housewarming, anniversary or birthday celebration. It was with the tremendous talent of Kori Clark that this vision became a reality.

Here are a few way to incorporate watercolor and citrus details at your next event:

  1. The Invitation: An invitation is one of the best ways to introduce your theme and color scheme to your guests. I love the watercolor citrus fruits and hand-lettered text, giving the guests a hint of what beauty they will behold at the party. Coordinating watercolor mailing labels are a fabulous way to dress up your envelope, too!
  2. Watercolor Details: A watercolor backdrop was designed in a pastel grapefruit hue, which set the tone for the dessert table. A coordinating welcome sign on the table in the entry pulled the two spaces together perfectly. I must be honest–I love these two pieces so much, I am tempted to frame and find a place in our home to keep them permanently! Custom watercolor designs are a perfect way to incorporate the theme for your event.
I used watercolors to paint white paper lanterns and create a big impact. Food-coloring and pastry brushes helped me create “watercolor” meringues, the perfect favor for guests to take home, which I displayed in darling glass jars. Watercolors are very easy to work with, and you do not have to be an artist to create either of the projects mentioned above!
  3. Citrus Look: A custom-painted citrus fruit wreath greets guests at the front door with a pop of fresh color (a bowl of fruit or fruit topiaries would create a lovely impact as well). Vintage, citrus-hued fabrics make for charming bunting to string along walls, tables and anywhere else you want to dress up! The citrus fruit cookies (watercolor painted by hand and edible, of course!) are by far one of my most favorite desserts. Each cookie is shaped to form a square like a miniature art canvas. Fondant citrus fruit was created using a “watercolor” effect and made stunning cake and cupcake toppers.
  4. Citrus Taste: Citrus flavor gets your theme across by appealing to your guests’ sense of taste! I adored the citrus-flavored gourmet lollipops, swirling several shades of citrus hues together for a watercolor-effect. The lovely French macarons were all citrus flavored. They were created with fondant leaves to look like oranges, cut in the shape of lemons and painted in grapefruit hues to look fresh-picked.
  5. Simple Spritzers: Citrus flavored spritzers are one of the easiest ways to incorporate citrus flavors and colorful beverages at your event. They look beautiful on a dessert table when displayed in square plastic bottles and adorned with baker’s twine and paper straws. Straw flags have a whole new purpose here. Watercolor fruit and text noting the beverage flavors offer a charming touch.

Stay tuned next month for beautiful bridal shower inspiration!

It’s Kate Landers here to share with you a honeycomb-inspired “new hive” housewarming party. One of the big trends in graphic and interior design this year is the honeycomb pattern. I loved having the opportunity to incorporate such a timeless, nature-inspired pattern into a very current look for a styled event.

You can incorporate a honeycomb pattern at your next event by recreating some of the details from our shoot:

1. Honeycomb Event Themes: The honeycomb pattern works beautifully with bees and hives. In addition to a housewarming “new hive” party, it works perfectly for a “What will it bee?” gender reveal party or baby shower, an “I’ll bee yours, you’ll bee mine” engagement party, or a bridal shower.

2. The Honeycomb Pattern: I chose to incorporate the honeycomb pattern in all printable items (from invitations and dessert tags to the labels and the backdrop), the glassware (note the honeycomb design in the glasses of sweet tea) as well as the desserts themselves (the hexagon cookies with a hand-iced honeycomb pattern). Feel free to add honeycomb printed table linens or favor bags for even more of this fabulous design at your event!

3. Hives and Bees: I loved incorporating hives and bees to accompany the honeycomb pattern. You will note edible hives and bees throughout my dessert table. Even the party favors featured a hand-iced hive cookie to match the graphic on the printable party items. I also loved the custom-framed “Welcome to our new hive” sign, which served as a lovely decoration on the mantle.

4. Don’t Forget The Honey! Wooden honey dippers are the perfect adornment for glasses of sweet tea. Honey sticks are beautiful on display and perfectly sweet when added to guests’ tea. A fresh piece of honeycomb looks lovely when displayed on a small dessert pedestal and can be enjoyed by many. It serves as a sweet reminder of the original source of this gorgeous design that we love seeing everywhere, from pillows and rugs to handmade chocolates and soap.

5. Fresh Florals: We all know the important role bees play with pollenating our flowers, and I cannot think of a better nod to their hard work than gorgeous arrangements of your favorite blooms. For our shoot I selected a large arrangement of spring flowers in a soft yellow and white color palette. I even opted for a large, fresh peony as the cake topper, offering a light and natural feeling to the dessert table.

Kate Landers here to share with you a perfect cake for your next spring celebration! A hot trend in cakes right now (that looks like it is here to stay) is “naked cakes.” What is normally covered by layers of buttercream and fondant is completely exposed on a “naked cake.” That’s right: these cakes allow the actual layers of cake and filling to take center stage. Often these cakes are topped with gorgeous fruit, flowers or other natural elements.

Here are a few suggestions to create your own beautiful “naked cake” sure to elicit “oohs” and “aahs” from your guests!

The Cake: Natural-colored cakes like vanilla, lemon or carrot are very popular for “naked cakes”. As long as you stack even layers of cake, it really is not hard to create one on your own! I chose vanilla cake for ours. A special note: Because the cake is exposed to air and not protected by a layer of frosting, it will dry out much faster. I suggest serving within 24 hours (at most) of completing your cake.

The Filling: Natural-colored buttercream (such as vanilla or chocolate) is highly popular, as well as lemon curd, raspberry and other fruits. While you can certainly create beading or rosettes with buttercream, a messier look often seems preferred. It is part of the appeal of these “perfectly imperfect” cakes. It also makes the cakes easier for you to make on your own.

The Decorations: From herbs and flowers to berries and tree fruits, there is so much variation to make your “naked cake” unique. You can incorporate flavors, colors and flowers to match the theme of your event.

We selected the Pantone Color of the Year “Radiant Orchid” as inspiration for our cake’s decoration. Toned down to pastel hues, it seemed perfect for a lovely spring celebration like Easter, Mother’s Day or a special graduation. From sweet peas and hyacinth to lilacs and peonies, blooms of the moment made it ideal for this time of year.
