It’s Kate Landers here to share with you a honeycomb-inspired “new hive” housewarming party. One of the big trends in graphic and interior design this year is the honeycomb pattern. I loved having the opportunity to incorporate such a timeless, nature-inspired pattern into a very current look for a styled event.

You can incorporate a honeycomb pattern at your next event by recreating some of the details from our shoot:

1. Honeycomb Event Themes: The honeycomb pattern works beautifully with bees and hives. In addition to a housewarming “new hive” party, it works perfectly for a “What will it bee?” gender reveal party or baby shower, an “I’ll bee yours, you’ll bee mine” engagement party, or a bridal shower.

2. The Honeycomb Pattern: I chose to incorporate the honeycomb pattern in all printable items (from invitations and dessert tags to the labels and the backdrop), the glassware (note the honeycomb design in the glasses of sweet tea) as well as the desserts themselves (the hexagon cookies with a hand-iced honeycomb pattern). Feel free to add honeycomb printed table linens or favor bags for even more of this fabulous design at your event!

3. Hives and Bees: I loved incorporating hives and bees to accompany the honeycomb pattern. You will note edible hives and bees throughout my dessert table. Even the party favors featured a hand-iced hive cookie to match the graphic on the printable party items. I also loved the custom-framed “Welcome to our new hive” sign, which served as a lovely decoration on the mantle.

4. Don’t Forget The Honey! Wooden honey dippers are the perfect adornment for glasses of sweet tea. Honey sticks are beautiful on display and perfectly sweet when added to guests’ tea. A fresh piece of honeycomb looks lovely when displayed on a small dessert pedestal and can be enjoyed by many. It serves as a sweet reminder of the original source of this gorgeous design that we love seeing everywhere, from pillows and rugs to handmade chocolates and soap.

5. Fresh Florals: We all know the important role bees play with pollenating our flowers, and I cannot think of a better nod to their hard work than gorgeous arrangements of your favorite blooms. For our shoot I selected a large arrangement of spring flowers in a soft yellow and white color palette. I even opted for a large, fresh peony as the cake topper, offering a light and natural feeling to the dessert table.

Q&A With Loloi Rugs (feat. Cyrus Loloi)

Q&A with Loloi Rugs from Layla Grayce

We just love how Loloi rugs transform a room! From bold chevron prints and floral patterns to blended neutral tones and solid hues, this versatile collection establishes a unique vibe in any space with hand-knotted, tufted and looped textures. Looking to revamp your bedroom or living room? We interviewed Cyrus Loloi, principal for Loloi, to get the inside scoop on the best tricks for choosing the perfect floor covering to suit your style. Shop the Loloi rug collection here (and enjoy free shipping on the entire line!).

Q&A with Cyrus Loloi of Loloi Rugs

LG: When deciding on the size of a rug for a room, how large should the border of flooring around the rug be? Does it vary from room to room (bedroom, living room, dining room)?
CL: Keeping at least 18 inches of bare floor exposed by the rug’s edges is the classic rule, but it can vary depending on the area. If you have a smaller room feel free to bend this rule a bit, but allow for at least a few inches of space at the rug’s edge. Rugs right up against the wall end up looking like carpet, and that’s not what you want.

LG: I’m looking for a rug for a high-traffic area. What are some tips for choosing the correct rug for my lifestyle?
CL: In this scenario, you have to consider two things: construction and fiber. The most durable construction is hand-knotted, but flat weaves and hand-tufted rugs last fairly well and are considerably less expensive. For fiber, I recommend either wool, polypropylene, or polyester. Many people think that synthetic rugs wear out quickly, but polypropylene and polyester are actually extremely durable and stain resistant.

LG: What are the top 3 things I should consider when selecting my new area rug?
CL: In the rug world, it all comes down to color, design, and texture. First, you have to consider how the colors in the rug are going to coordinate with the room’s existing colors. The colors don’t have to match perfectly, but you do want to pick complementary tones. When in doubt, a natural fiber rug like sisal or undyed wool offers a very versatile look. Trust me, when you get color right, it makes all the difference.

For design, pick a pattern that fits your style and personality. Don’t be afraid to pick a traditional rug in a contemporary room, or a modern rug in a traditional room. As a word of caution, if you have elaborate wallpaper or patterned upholstery, a solid design like the Anzio Denim Hand Woven Wool Rug works best.

Texture plays an important role too. Textured rugs like the Sahara Ivory Hand Knotted Wool Rug offset the solid surface of your floor and draw your eyes to the dimension of the rug.

LG What are the biggest trends in rugs right now?
CL: I’m enjoying the wave of blues that designers seem to be using everywhere this year. Aqua, indigo, and navy are really on-trend right now, especially paired with white, like this rug.

Kate Landers here to share with you a perfect cake for your next spring celebration! A hot trend in cakes right now (that looks like it is here to stay) is “naked cakes.” What is normally covered by layers of buttercream and fondant is completely exposed on a “naked cake.” That’s right: these cakes allow the actual layers of cake and filling to take center stage. Often these cakes are topped with gorgeous fruit, flowers or other natural elements.

Here are a few suggestions to create your own beautiful “naked cake” sure to elicit “oohs” and “aahs” from your guests!

The Cake: Natural-colored cakes like vanilla, lemon or carrot are very popular for “naked cakes”. As long as you stack even layers of cake, it really is not hard to create one on your own! I chose vanilla cake for ours. A special note: Because the cake is exposed to air and not protected by a layer of frosting, it will dry out much faster. I suggest serving within 24 hours (at most) of completing your cake.

The Filling: Natural-colored buttercream (such as vanilla or chocolate) is highly popular, as well as lemon curd, raspberry and other fruits. While you can certainly create beading or rosettes with buttercream, a messier look often seems preferred. It is part of the appeal of these “perfectly imperfect” cakes. It also makes the cakes easier for you to make on your own.

The Decorations: From herbs and flowers to berries and tree fruits, there is so much variation to make your “naked cake” unique. You can incorporate flavors, colors and flowers to match the theme of your event.

We selected the Pantone Color of the Year “Radiant Orchid” as inspiration for our cake’s decoration. Toned down to pastel hues, it seemed perfect for a lovely spring celebration like Easter, Mother’s Day or a special graduation. From sweet peas and hyacinth to lilacs and peonies, blooms of the moment made it ideal for this time of year.

This is Kate Landers, thrilled to share with you my son Noah’s second birthday party! Having a son named Noah who is turning two and is fascinated by animals, I thought a Noah’s Ark-themed birthday party would be perfect for him.

Here are a few special details from the party, plus helpful hints I learned along the way:

My dear friend and paperie designer Loralee Lewis created the most spectacular “Noah’s Ark” collection for our celebration, including a set of six animal prints we hung in his room. I love using printed items from my parties in a nursery, bedroom, or playroom to enjoy long after the party.

The cake topper, an amazing gift from one of the most extraordinary fondant artists in the world (Brenda of Sugar High, Inc.), absolutely took my breath away. You can keep an edible work of art like this one for many years; we store our ark under a bell jar for easy admiration.

Cupcakes are one of Noah’s favorite sweet treats, so we had the most adorable fondant animal cupcake toppers created by my incredibly talented friend Brittany of Edible Details. I love using desserts as a centerpiece for children’s parties, so in this case I stacked two graduated cake stands from Layla Grayce, creating a “tower” to display the darling cupcakes.

We kept party favors simple and age-appropriate, including a precious ark favor box filled with animal finger puppets and bottles of bubbles. To get the look, spray paint plastic animal figurines and attach to the top of the lids of jars or bottles full of your party favor.

Noah loves building blocks, so we surprised him with wood grain-printed cardboard blocks for the party. He and his fellow party-goers were able to help “build the ark”, a PERFECT activity for toddlers. I suggest incorporating your child’s favorite type of toy into the party as we did for a fun surprise!

It was an absolute joy celebrating Noah’s second birthday. As a mom, I love each stage of his life more than the last, even when I didn’t think that would ever be possible. As an event stylist, I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to design such a special event for my own son. I cannot wait for his next party, when he can become involved in the planning process!

Q&A with Pine Cone Hill and Dash & Albert’s founder Annie Selke

LG: Describe your aesthetic, especially as it relates to spring.
AS: I love textiles, I love color and I love comfort, so when I was conceiving the Pine Cone Hill Spring 2014 collection, I thought about all of those things. This season I wanted the fabrics to be totally touchable, feeling like you had washed them many times already. We pre-washed the majority of the collection in pursuit of the perfect hand. I also wanted all of the pieces to transport you to an unnamed but fabulous island, where the only questions you need to answer are: when do I want to eat, sleep, read and swim today?

LG: What was the main inspiration behind your new collection for Spring 2014?
AS: Light and effortless layers in tantalizing-to-the-touch textures and a fresh and contemporary palette – French blue, coral, platinum and indigo – all punctuated with a dash of hot green.

LG: What three words would you use to describe this collection?
AS: Crisp, comforting & calming.

LG: What are your favorite patterns from this collection and why?
AS: Well, of course I love all of my patterns, but I love the go-with-everything quality of Varana, Varkala and Ramala. And everything coral feels really wonderful and, go figure, on trend!

LG: What patterns/products from PCH (Spring 2014 collection or otherwise) can be found in your office or home?
AS: We ship to our customers first, kind of a family hold-back situation if you will, but on my wish list are the Marina sky quilt, Laundered Linen coral throw and Varana sky duvet cover and shams.

LG: Everyone’s design process is different. Walk us through yours. Once you have an idea for a new pattern or product, what steps do you take before the final product is produced?
AS: I wanted to expand on our Cape Calm collection and envisioned spicing up the predominantly blue palette with coral and acid green. I wanted a grouping that included quilts, duvet covers and accessories that would be effortlessly livable and easy to layer in a single or mixed combination of colors.

LG: If you could raid anyone’s linen closet, whose would it be and why?
AS: Hmmm, having gotten a peek at two of Bunny Williams’ linen closets , I would have to grab those. And I am already blessed to have the benefit of my mother’s expertly curated collection of linens.
