Give us a peek into your personal style, faves and hot trends to watch out for!

  • My signature colors: I wouldn’t say that I have a “signature” color, but if you looked around my apartment (or in my closet) you’d find lots of neutrals and shades of blue — and lots and lots of stripes.
  • 5 things in my handbag right now: iPhone, my Moleskin notebook, fine-point felt tip pens, Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses and a stainless steel water bottle.
  • Trends I have my eye on: I love all the dip-dyed pieces I’ve seen this summer — especially in shades of indigo. I also love seeing lots of block-printed designs that hint at travels to India.
  • The superpower I would love to have: To fluently speak and understand all languages.
  • I can’t live without: Running. I don’t know how I stayed sane before I took it up.
  • My favorite place on Earth is: New York City, of course! Though Montauk is a close second.
  • Book or music I am loving right now: Right now I’m reading Anthony Doerr’s Memory Wall (I loved his first two books, The Shell Collector, a short story collection, and About Grace, a novel.) I’m listening to Gillian Welch’s new album The Harrow & The Harvest, which I’ve been waiting eight years for her to release.
  • Any big personal or professional plans in the works? Yes! I’m working on the launch of an online newsletter all about the art of entertaining called Toast. We’re slated to launch this fall, and I couldn’t be more excited.
  • Layla Grayce items I covet: If money were no object, I’d invest in Matteo bedding. I especially love the Tick pattern. And what can I say? I’m a sucker for stripes. I love this bold DwellStudio Draper Stripe Wool Rug. I’ve been meaning to update our hallway fixture since I moved into my apartment nearly five years ago — this Jamie Young Lafitte Mercury Glass Pendant would be perfect.

  • My signature colors: I’m big on black, white, and grey in varying shades, and I always come back to red and peacock blue when I’m craving something more vibrant.
  • 5 things in my handbag right now: Aquaphor, a Smythson notebook in camel leather, enormous black Oliver Peoples sunglasses, lavender-scented hand sanitizing spray and a Canon digital camera.
  • Trends I have my eye on: I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of ikat.
  • The superpower I would love to have: The ability to instantly “beam” myself places, a la Star Trek.
  • I can’t live without: Ballet flats—they’re comfy, chic, classic, and go with just about everything.
  • My favorite place on Earth is: Poolside but overlooking the ocean with loved ones in Bali.
  • What I’m reading: I’m reading Life: Keith Richards, which of course has me listening to a lot of Rolling Stones.
  • Big plans in the works: I’m helping Madewell launch their tumblr blog—come find me there!
  • Layla Grayce items I covet: Ikat Print Pillow with Red Piping . Yet another reminder of how much I love ikat, especially in colors as rich and bold as the red and magenta and red combo here. I love the rustic, slightly exotic vibe of this Arteriors Jarrod carved wood, drum-shaped lamp. And there’s something irresistibly pretty and ladylike about this ornate chinoiserie Oisaux et Fleurs Porcelain wallpaper, which would look great in a powder room.

  • My signature colors: I love wearing red, kelly green and black, but for decor, I tend to go with more beachy tones – aquas, spring greens, shades of coral and orange, and tons of neutrals.
  • 5 things in my handbag right now: I always have my iphone, chapstick, gum, hair ties and (duh) wallet. Those are my essentials!
  • Trends I have my eye on: I love that green is coming back as a huge color for fall! I’m also happy to see this global/collective trend continue in home decor and on the runways. Embracing traditional pieces from other cultures and finding ways to reinvent them and mix them all together creates such a stunning visual treat. Educating our eye on the history of all these different pieces, patterns, and textiles is so fun. We’ve seen a lot the influence from Morocco, India, and even Native American, but I’m seeing a big Japanese influence coming into play now too. Very sculptural and origami inspired.
  • The superpower I would love to have: The ability to clone myself. There’s never enough time in the day for one person to get it all done!
  • I can’t live without: Art – and I mean that in the broadest sense of the word. Music, fashion, paintings, photography, architecture, landscape. Anything that comes from a core of creativity. It’s like food for me. Also my laptop comes in quite essential as a blogger. Add in a good pair of jeans and a comfy t-shirt and I’m pretty good to go.
  • My favorite place on Earth is: My home. It’s the one place I can be alone, be totally me and have complete creative control over my environment. Of course, if I had to put my home anywhere in the world? Hmmm… that’s a tough one. It would definitely be on a beach, probably in some small seaside community just outside a big city. I need both in my world!
  • Music I am listening to right now: I just finished a few books while on vacation – it’s the only time I have to sit and get through them! I read The Help, The Paris Wife and One Day. The Paris Wife made me want to revisit Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. As for music, I listen to it ALL. Really loving my Seattle peeps, The Head and the Heart though.
  • Big plans in the works: We’re working on a total redesign of the blog that I’m SUPER excited about! It’s going to freshen things up a bit and organize posts to be more searchable. I’m seeing the blog not only as a place for daily inspiration but a really great resource and I want readers to be able to use it that way. Along with the revamp will come some exciting new original content and series that I can’t wait to share!
  • Layla Grayce items I covet: can honestly say I covet pretty much everything in the ‘home’ category at Layla Grayce! Right now I’m shopping for my new apartment and I’m obsessed with finding the perfect settee for my breakfast nook! I love the high back of the Layla Grayce Norton design – it’s so cozy! Some of my other favorites are the Walnut Center Table and Eloquence Lyon Mirror.

  • 5 things in my handbag right now: MAC Sheer Pressed Powder, iPhone4, Kate Spade Gold Coast Jules Wallet, Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, Moleskine Notebook.
  • Trends I have my eye on: All over white, bold wallpaper, preppy accessories (think gold, nautical).
  • The superpower I would love to have: To be able to read minds.
  • I can’t live without: My iPhone 4.
  • My favorite place on Earth is: A sandy beach.
  • Music I am listening to right now: Cypress Hill – their debut album.
  • Big personal or professional plans in the works: I’m having an absolute blast planning my September wedding & a move to Long Beach, CA. My design background is playing a huge roll in the creative and visual aspect of the planning process! I can’t wait to live beach side.
  • Layla Grayce items I covet: I’m typically an all-white bedding type of gal; but I would love love love to dress my bed in these Dwell Studio Home Draper Stripe sheets. I love how gaudy-in-a-good-way the Oly Studio Grayson Chandelier is. It’d look great in an entryway, dining room or bathroom. Operation Shower

Just after Labor Day, the timing is perfect to announce our partnership with Operation Shower in Atlanta on September 21st. Founded by LeAnn Morrissey to support military families, the organization hosts base-wide baby showers for women experiencing pregnancy and child birth while their spouses are deployed serving our country. In addition to the box of supplies, gear and goodies for each mom and her baby, the shower offers these moms the thanks, support and party they deserve. Welcome LeAnn to the blog to share what makes Operation Shower so memorable to all who participate, and to see how you can get involved:

  • What has surprised you most about starting Operation Shower?
I am consistently surprised at the generosity of individuals and small companies. The desire to help is huge!
  • How are the women who attend selected?
We always work directly with the bases to select the women because they have the most knowledge and are able to select the moms in the best way for us.
  • What difference does attending make in their lives?
We hope first that it makes a difference by letting the moms know we are thankful for their family’s service and sacrifice. If they did not know this prior to the shower, they will know it after the day is done. We also hope that it provides a great and joyful day, so that one day they can tell their child “you won’t believe the baby shower I had for you!” Then, we hope that they are able to make connections with other moms and carry those connections beyond the day.
  • Tell us about one of your favorite moments from a shower.
There are many! Most of my favorite moments come when I have the opportunity to really talk to the women and hear their stories. These are the moments that resonate the most. At a recent shower, we had a mom whose husband was deployed, she was pregnant with twin boys (due any day) and her mom was helping her out. However, her mom was deploying the following week as well. When she told this story at the shower, so many other women stepped up and told her not to worry, they would be there for her when she delivered. It was great and is why we host these showers.
  • How can others contribute to the cause?
We have many ways to contribute. Our greatest need, as with most non-profit organizations, is cash. We have on-line donation through Paypal and Google Checkout on our website (www.operationshower.org) and you can also send checks. We love it when people host parties in the spirit of our organization and raise money through small fundraisers or events. We also always need product donations and have a Wishlist on Amazon. In addition, we are always looking for sponsors to help us host the showers.

To learn more about what Layla Grayce and our vendors will be contributing for the September 21st event, be sure to check out our Operation Shower information page.

Oly Studio Duncan Chair – This chair would look amazing in any room, from a living room, library or even in a bedroom as a reading chair. I love this sleek, but traditional design.
