Designers We Love: Grant K. Gibson

Grant K. Gibson’s style was lauded by Elle Decor as “always eclectic, livable and easy on the eyes,” and we couldn’t agree more. Gibson’s core design philosophy is that a home should reflect the personality of those who inhabit it. Considering how much we love his design portfolio, we wouldn’t mind being friends with his clients!

A well-edited kitchen utilizes decor as well as organic materials, fresh flowers and lemons to create pops of yellow that tie the space together without feeling overly decorated.

Key neutral pieces like the chair and rug seen here are a perfect example of the classic design for which Gibson is known.

One of Gibson’s signature talents is using traditional design elements (a regal portrait, secretary, luxe tablecloth) in a way that still feels inviting and relaxed. Below, the color of the year, emerald, makes a strong appearance as the focal point of an eclectic dining room, where Gibson created a unique layered look using colorful accessories.

Although we love his neutral spaces, we’re equally as impressed with Gibson’s ability to create a compelling color-centric space. Here, he mixes several shades of pink resulting in an unusually sophisticated look with depth.

Gibson himself is an avid chef, so we aren’t surprised that his kitchens receive so much attention. Here, he follows his trend of bringing the outside in with an abundance of fresh florals.

Designers We Love: Phoebe Howard

Atlanta-based designer Phoebe Howard’s aesthetic is quintessentially Southern, comfortable, timeless and elegant. Howard is known for her fresh take on traditional style, which is evident in the many of her projects. These are a few of our favorites.

One thing that remains consistent throughout Howard’s work is her masterful use of neutral color palettes. Her work also illustrates the power of symmetry, as seen in this bedroom, which creates a sense of order and formality.

Howard’s expertise extends to choosing and placing accessories. On a coffee table, Howard opts for a well-edited selection of just three glass jugs, a stack of coffee table books and bit of greenery for freshness. Well placed lamps, chandeliers and sconces add plenty of light options throughout her interiors.

A bedroom does double duty as a seating area thanks to a cleverly placed sofa, coffee table and two upholstered chairs at the foot of the bed.

Plush seating areas are a telltale mark of Howard’s work, seen below in the form of a cozy nap-inducing chaise boasting two soft pillows and a throw.

Howard’s advice for pillows on a sofa? Mix and match fabrics and limit patterned fabrics to one set of pillows per sofa. Also, start from the outside with two larger pillows and work your way in, throwing in an odd shape to keep the look from feeling too symmetrical.

Six pieces of framed art are the focal point in a smaller seating area (below right), equipped with a sofa, two upholstered chairs and a small bench for guests to pull up a seat and chat. In another larger seating area, complete with a chaise, the focus is kept on the view outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Howard took a risk by placing a bed in the center of the bedroom, but it paid dividends. Just look at this gorgeous space! Not only did this choice help with traffic flow to all corners of the room, it also allows the homeowner to peer through the French doors to the views outside each morning.

Notice anything in particular about these two spaces? In the living room, a painting above the sofa serves as the room’s artwork, while the walls themselves are the art in the bedroom, featuring a mural that creates the perfect backdrop for this beautiful space.

Molly Sims’ Nursery Design

Vintage Sputnik Pendant, DwellStudio Giraffe Push Toy, Animal Art by Sharon Montrose, Pillows covered in John Robshaw Fabric

Layla Grayce co-owners Tiffany Harris and Wendy Estes had the pleasure of co-designing Molly Sims’ nursery alongside Molly’s longtime friend and designer, Kishani Perera. Molly’s own aesthetic of modern bohemian inspired the look: fresh and modern with a vintage twist. And since Molly isn’t afraid of color, mixing and matching patterns, or breaking the so-called “design rules,” it was guaranteed to be fun right from the get-go.

John Robshaw block printed fabrics provided a basis for the design, bringing in a palette of blues, pinks and oranges that give the room color and personality, while a soft sky blue on the walls gives the room a light and bright feel. For added functionality, an entire wall of storage and a day bed were installed to make up for the nursery’s lack of closet space.

Molly instantly fell in love with the DucDuc modern furnishing line, and many of the room’s pieces, including the crib’s tie-die finish, feature custom finishes. Kishani found the vintage sputnik pendant, vintage pillows and added the sweet animal art. For all of us, working with Molly was a joyful process from start to finish and Layla Grayce is so excited to have been a part of designing such an amazing nursery for baby Brooks Stuber.

How to create advanced Olioboards

Olioboard Design Tutorial

In preparation for the upcoming Layla Grayce Moodboard Design Challenge we have decided to share several blog posts to provide some great tips and tricks on using Olioboard to help you create gorgeous room designs. This is the final installment.

Our friend Stacy Naquin has already provided a nicely detailed overview on the basics of using Olioboard. You can find that post here. This post will focus on some of the advanced tools with video tutorials. We will show you how to use them to manipulate the images on your moodboard and create more detailed and polished looking room designs. So let’s begin!!

Tip 1: Use the background and texture libraries to create a base for your 3D design When creating room designs on Olioboard you can opt to create 2D collages (like the one below), made up of a collection of images or you can choose to create a 3D space (like the one above).

Olioboard Design Tutorial

If you are interested in creating a 3D moodboard design, the best place to start is in our background and texture libraries. Olioboard has a collection of empty room images that you can use as a base for your moodboard design. The room images include various styles such as contemporary, industrial, traditional, and outdoor spaces. Once you have chosen your background image, you can customize the image using our texture library. The texture library contains various textures like, brick, stone, barn boards and more. In this video tutorial you will learn about the libraries and how to build your 3D moodboard design with perspective in mind.

Tip 2: The Crop tool is your best friend You’ll find that this tool will be one of the tools you rely on the most. This video tutorial will show you how to use the crop tool to manipulate images, create clean moodboard designs and how to crop and rotate visuals so they appear to be half hidden by walls or railings.

Tip 3: Make the most of the advanced background removal tools Olioboard’s background removal tool can help you separate the background from an image you wish to incorporate into you design. It can also help you clean up the edges of the product to create a more polished look. This video tutorial will show you how to use the advanced background removal options to maximize the look of your room design.

Tip 4: Creating 3D moldboards on Olioboard In this 15 minute in-depth video tutorial, we take you through every step, from beginning to end on creating 3D room designs on Olioboard. This tutorial covers all the tools in detail and in repetition.

I hope you have enjoyed this blog post. We can’t wait to see all the entries in the upcoming Layla Grayce Design Contest. Good luck to you all and happy Olioboarding!

A New Orleans native, interior designer Suzanne Rheinstein is internationally known for her elegant, sophisticated aesthetic. Her motto? Fewer things but better things, focusing on a mixture of beautiful objects, furniture styles, personal art, painted surfaces, and great attention to comfort, textures, details and light. In homage, we rounded up a few of our favorite spaces from Rheinstein’s vast portfolio, all of which illustrate her powerful belief that “living well every day is much more important than getting your house together only for special occasions.”

We’re obsessed with pink at Layla Grayce, and we love the way Samantha scattered hints of this color throughout her own home. The rest of Samantha’s work is just as gorgeous. Check it out!
