1920s Great Gatsby Themed Twins’ 1st Birthday Party!

Layla Grayce co-owner Tiffany Harris and her husband Tom were counting their blessings after a joy-filled first year with twins Kirra and Cole. However, they learned quickly that caring for two newborns left little time to spend with friends. As the twins’ first birthday approached, they planned a Great Gatsby-themed party so both adults and children could take part in the celebration – some meeting Kirra and Cole for the first time. Inspired by recent fashion trends and her long-time love for 20s Art Deco architecture, fashion and music, Tiffany imagined a gorgeous outdoor garden party for the milestone moment.

Channeling the style of Gatsby characters Daisy and Nick, the whole family donned custom-made attire. Kirra looked darling in a vintage flapper dress, lace leggings, a faux fur wrap and a handmade feather headpiece, while Cole appeared dapper in a white pinstripe suit, a handmade newsboy cap and an adorable striped bowtie.

The Doctors House Museum and Gazebo in Glendale, CA, captured the vintage look that defines the Gatsby era, making it a perfect backdrop for the twins’ birthday bash. From 1920s-themed drinks and desserts to festive lawn games like croquet, every detail took guests back to the 1920s period delivering Art Deco charm, including a live barbershop quartet crooning catchy tunes near the house. Artisan-made and organic Carmela Ice Cream is a local favorite; their vintage cart was perfect for dishing out old-fashioned sweet treats for guests.

What first birthday party would be complete without cake? In two of our favorite images of the day, Kirra and Cole happily dig into their individual “smash” cakes, which featured Art Deco feather frosting and tiny pennant banners. Knowing boy and girl twin parties usually revolve around baby blue and powder pink hues, Tiffany gave tradition a creative twist with a blush salmon, strong peacock blue and brassy gold color scheme.

Guests nibbled on blue and pink macarons, popcorn in pink bags, pink lemonade in mason jars and cotton candy. Seated at long tables, partygoers enjoyed small bites – tea sandwiches (crustless for kids), pear endive salad cups, apple pie pops and cotton candy, to name a few.

Encouraged to dress in Roaring 20s attire, guests received strands of pearls and skimmer hats as they arrived. White linens and classic serving dishes received bright accents with romantic floral bouquets and handmade decorations.

Expecting one-of-each twins? Unsure how to decorate a gender neutral and stylish nursery built for two? Don’t worry: Layla Grayce founder/co-owner Tiffany Harris, mom to son and daughter twins Cole and Kirra, dipped into her design expertise to curate an inspiring gender-neutral nursery that exudes top-notch style. Instead of avoiding stereotypical boy and girl shades, Harris took a fresh approach by embracing contemporary shades of soft blue, pale pink and lime green. Armed with a complementary color palette, Harris combined clean-lined, modern furnishings – like the wooden crib and sleek, comfortable glider – with patterned bedding and a graphic, colorful rug, creating a youthful vibe both sophisticated and chic yet neither masculine or feminine. Two babies means double the storage, so a functional changing table equipped with drawers (and playful circular detailing!) in addition to a brightly colored nightstand is a must. Add a few fun-loving toys and snuggly accessories, and you can check “stylish nursery for two” off your never-ending list.

An interior designer and certified color consultant, Layla Grayce and Zinc Door co-founder Tiffany Harris is our resident design maven whose artistic eye and passion for decor resonate throughout our curated collection of shopping delights. She shares her vision and expertise in designing everything from celebrity nurseries to an upcoming line of furniture. Tiffany kicks off her holiday shopping this year with a list of must-give goodies plus a sweet Christmas wish for her newborn twins:

My favorite family holiday tradition is… Going back as far as I can remember, my parents would find a family in need and assign each of us to one of the children. After learning the age and gender, we would shop for presents for our child, then together as a family we would wrap the gifts with great care and bake plates of cookies. On Christmas Eve we would leave the gifts anonymously at their door, ringing the doorbell before dashing away. For me this is the true spirit of Christmas giving that I hope to pass on to my own children.

Give like Tiffany…

Tiffany's baby Shower - it's a boy AND it's a girl!

They say lightning never strikes twice, but we’re feeling an extra bolt of good fortune as we get ready to celebrate a 2nd set of Layla Grayce twins. Nearly four years after Wendy Estes had identical twin girls, her Layla Grayce co-owner and good friend Tiffany Harris has extra big news of her own – she is expecting a boy and girl this fall! Wendy teamed up with Sara Westbrook of Sara Westbrook Designs (formerly with One Charming Party) and stylist Samantha Pothier for a big bash to shower Tiffany with blessings and baby basics for the big arrival.

Tiffany's baby Shower - it's a boy AND it's a girl!
The newsprint inspired theme had vintage elements with a modern twist, artfully incorporated into the smallest of details: 1. A vintage typeset frame with “T” for Tiffany accents the buffet table along with vintage inspired candlesticks and hydrangeas arranged in galvanized buckets. 2. An antique typewriter displays a welcome letter to guests, inviting them to partake in homemade caramels and take a name tag. 3.Vintage newspapers with a baby theme crossword puzzle and cleverly worded headlines entertained guests (plates resting on velvet trimmed napkins from Pom Pom at Home). 4. Name tags printed with typewriter font are arranged alphabetically by the entryway and adhere with diagonal black and white striped tape. 5. Vintage newsprint wrapped hydrangeas tied in jute string nestled into numbered crates from Gabby are displayed throughout the party. Inspired by newsstands from days of old when flowers were often sold wrapped in newsprint, they served a dual purpose of party decoration and post-party favors for guests. Photography: Tara Rochelle

Delish to the eyes and palate: 1. Homemade caramels wrapped in vintage newsprint wax paper. 2. Carrot cake cupcakes with toppers from South Pasadena’s Heirloom Bakery. 3. The dessert table showcases a lemon cake filled with lemon curd and cream cheese frosting (designed by Sara Westbrook and Sam Pothier) flanked by carrot cake cupcakes displayed on Aidan Gray Metal plate stands and hostess style old-fashioned cupcakes. 4 & 5. A savory lunch from Heirloom Bakery highlights sliced Panini sandwiches resting on vintage newsprint waxed paper. A printed menu with gray and white pennant flags hangs over each buffet table. Tiffany's baby shower - it's a boy AND it's a girl!
Tiffany’s ties to Layla Grayce are so much a part of her that incorporating them into the shower was a must: 1. Mixing elements made a modern statement with Aidan Gray decorative pillows scattered along a rustic bench juxtaposed with Eloquence gold trimmed chairs. A galvanized side table by Aidan Gray topped with the Grenich Urn table lamp gave this vintage inspired shower an edge. 2. Simple hydrangeas in old fashioned water bottles get wrapped in white cotton and burlap, secured with a white diaper pin. 3. Newsprint and decorative papers get pleated and folded to create decorative rosettes and swags. 4. Letterpress flash cards hang overhead. 5. An industrial chic Jamie Young steam punk lamp helps set the mood as guests arrive. 6. Hydrangeas displayed in numbered crates from Gabby. Photography: Tara Rochelle

The shower was held at a private residence in Pasadena where the black and white awning tied in perfectly to the party theme. Ruffled Audrey tablecloths from Pom Pom at Home add a feminine touch to the dessert and entry tables. Photography: Tara Rochelle

Tiffany never stops, so no wonder we saw lots of wheels in the gifts from her Valco Baby stroller of choice to the motorcycle menagerie of Blabla knit dolls designed by the ladies of Layla Grayce. 1, 2, 3. Get to Know: Tiffany Harris, Co-founder of Layla Grayce

Tiffany Harris

Serena Drum Chandelier from Oly Studio in Tiffany’s newly decorated home

Layla Grayce co-founder Tiffany Harris is our resident design maven, interior designer and certified color consultant. While she can often be found scouting the shows for the latest trends and new products, today she takes a few moments to share her love of LG, what inspires her and also gives us a sneak peek into her newly decorated home (which of course features some of her favorite Layla Grayce products!)

What’s been the best part of starting Layla Grayce?
The relationships we have built with our vendors, customers and employees have been the best part. Layla Grayce wouldn’t be where we are today without all of the support from them as well as our families. Also the ability to go to work each day and build a business I am passionate about is a dream come true. It is an immense amount of work to run your own business, but it is also very rewarding to look back at where we started and how much we have grown.

What has surprised you most, how is LG different than you expected?
Well to start, it has been a lot harder to create an online business than ever expected. When we started almost 7 years ago, there weren’t other online stores like us so we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into. But once we began building Layla Grayce, there was no stopping us (and still isn’t!) Being your own boss means that you are typically the last one to leave at night, work on weekends and also while on vacation. You imagine that if you run your own business you can come and go as you please, but the reality is that finding and making time to spend with family and friends is often the greatest challenge.

Describe your style in 5 words or less.
I’m going to stretch this one a little bit – 5 words just isn’t enough! Traditional-modern, vintage-inspired, eclectic, serene, inviting.

Give us a peek into your style obsessions, faves, inspirations and guilty pleasures!

  • Signature colors: White, grey, camel, linen, seaglass blue, navy blue, splash of hot pink or yellow.
  • Favorite Layla Grayce items for the home: Dakota Sofa by Oly Studio, Serena Drum Chandelier from Oly Studio and Jamie Young Mother of Pearl Lamp.
  • Favorite item under $100: Lollia – I am obsessed with the entire “In-Love” collection, but I think the Sea Salt Sachet Set makes a great gift and the packaging is sublime!
  • Favorite coffee table books: Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People, Hue by Kelly Wearstler and Classic Homes of Los Angeles by Douglas Woods.
  • Favorite fashion item: shoes – without a doubt.
  • I cannot live without: my iphone, laptop, dvr, vitamin water and the ocean.
  • My favorite place on earth: sitting on the beach, preferably in Hawaii, reading a book next to my sweet husband.
  • My favorite guilty pleasures: gelato and salty chips.
  • I am inspired by: my parents, my husband and being of service to those less fortunate.
  • A cause I care deeply about: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, 5
  • You’d be surprised to know: I enjoy watching ice hockey and formula 1 racing, love warm weather surfing and oil painting.
