From Annie To You: New Bella Blue (And A Free Book Too!)

Annie Selke Pine Cone Hill Bella Blue Interview

Bella Blue by Annie Selke of Pine Cone Hill

It’s new, it’s gorgeous and it’s ours exclusively! We are thrilled to be the first to offer you the new Bella Blue Collection from renowned Pine Cone Hill designer and author, Annie Selke. Annie has graciously offered us exclusive rights to introduce Bella Blue and also is including a free gift, her book, Fresh American Spaces to the first to order! She joins us today to talk about the inspiration for Bella Blue and tell us a bit about herself.

Tell us how you came to be a textile designer.
You know, I don’t really think of myself as a textile designer. Isn’t that odd? I consider myself someone with a good eye and a passion for product. That said, I was drawn to all things textile from a very early age (like, four years old) and stayed close to that love throughout college, where I majored in textile science, but not design.

Selke Interview for Bella Blue PCHWhat inspired the new Bella Blue Collection?
Bella Blue is a reinterpretation of our longtime favorite pattern named Caroline. It was time for Caroline to retire, but her devoted fans—and there are many—demanded, in the nicest way, that we fill her shoes. Thus, Bella was born.

In your book, you showcase 5 Fresh American decorating styles. Where do you think the Bella Blue collection fits into those styles?
Good question. For me, she’s a hybrid of Refined Romantic and Everyday Exuberance.

What elements combine to create that look?
Pine Cone Hill Bella BlueFrom Refined Romantic, Bella has the elements of flowers and provenance (the pattern itself, which was adapted from a vintage document print), and detail (in the lovely ruffled detailing). From Everyday Exuberance, she has the element of color—a fresh and pretty palette on a lovely shade of blue, perked up with white polka dots.

How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t designing?
I love to travel, I love to cook, I love to spend time with my dogs, and I love riding the range at the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson, AZ!

Tell us something that most people might not know about you.
I love team cattle penning, also at the White Stallion Ranch! It is the most fun 17 seconds ever!

Kate Landers here, thrilled to be back after maternity leave to share more celebration inspiration! I designed this Vintage Train Party for a dear client, Marti Mashburn. I came up with design and styling elements, menu/activity/favor suggestions and vendor recommendations, but it was Marti herself who pulled it all together, executing it perfectly (while seven months pregnant!). Here are some hints from Hudson’s second birthday party which I hope will inspire you to design your own next event:

  • A Fresh Color Scheme Can Personalize A Popular Theme:  Have you been dreaming of a party theme that suddenly seems to be popping up everywhere? Fear not, you can still use that theme, making it your own by incorporating a unique color scheme. The “vintage train” theme has been popular for younger boy parties, but Marti wanted Hudson’s event to be something extra special. I brainstormed some less common color schemes, and Marti chose a combination of navy, light blue, kelly green and gray–my favorite!
  • Reinforce Your Theme With Printed Paper Elements:
The highly talented and brilliant Loralee Lewis created the fabulous printed elements for Marti’s party (she also did the custom printed work for my gender reveal party, and baby shower). I am smitten with how Loralee integrated the color story, creating so many darling elements that reinforced the theme. The straw flags are a personal favorite, adding a strong pop of kelly green.
  • Birthday Cakes Are Always A Classic:  I adore cupcakes, but have been thrilled to see the popularity of a traditional birthday cake at many children’s parties these days. Keep it simple and still make a stunning statement! Marti knew she wanted a tiered cake with a three-dimensional train. I knew JUST the person to create this for her: Brittany of Edible Details! Brittany was able to create a spectacular vintage train cake topper, matching the style and colors from the printed party goods from Loralee.
  • Classic Patterns And Table Linens Give Your Party Sweet Style:  Navy and white ticking stripe fabric was one of the first patterns that popped into my mind; it is an old fashioned design that never goes out of style. Marti and I both love the practicality and look of fabric table linens, and how you can use them over and over again. Reusing a floor-length table cloth from Hudson’s first birthday party, Marti created a new look by making her own ticking stripe fabric table runner.
  • Costume Pieces Make Great Party Experiences & Party Favors: Marti and I found some darling and inexpensive train conductor hats from Oriental Trading Company for the party guests. They coordinated perfectly with bandanas Marti gave as favors, and the children wore both on the party train ride. Simple costumes can add such a magical touch to a child’s experience at a party, and this is a perfect example that they don’t have to be elaborate or even custom made to be fabulous.

Many thanks to Marti for allowing me to share her charming son Hudson’s second birthday celebration! There were some things that didn’t turn out just as Marti would have liked (you can’t even tell, right?). I hope you can take her experience as an example that no party will be absolutely perfect, some things don’t go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a stylish party and the happiest birthday boy or girl on earth!

Market Trends 2012: Atlanta

Atlanta Market Trends 2012: Scale
SCALE: Dramatic extremes of scale in both furnishings and accessories were a hot trend at the 2012 Atlanta Market. Furniture is getting upsized, along with everything from enormous pendant lighting and mirrors to oversize accessories. We also noticed more petite furnishings than ever before, most evident in itsy bitsy chairs. It’s creating quite a contrast look in interiors, a “sizeable difference” if you will.

Atlanta Market Trends 2012: Brights
BRIGHTS: Brights were everywhere; definitely the strongest trend we noted, with the home decor world catching up to what’s happening in the fashion world. From vibrant brights to neons to colorblocking, we’re seeing rugs, pillows and other accessories bringing a jolt of color back to interiors.

Atlanta Market Trends 2012: Paris
PARIS: Who doesn’t love Paris? This season it’s going more literal with lamps crafted to look like the Eiffel Tower in styles ranging from rustic European to eclectic and industrial. The Parisian trend continues onto rugs and textiles that feature French phrases and images of the iconic towers, buildings and arches.

Atlanta Market Trends 2012: Baskets
BASKETS: Used as accessories on the walls, turned upside down and made into lampshades and of course used for traditional storage, there were more baskets introduced this year than we’ve seen before.

Atlanta Market Trends 2012: Tabletop
TABLETOP: Granted, tabletop linens are nothing new, but so many of our favorite brands and vendors are branching out to include tabletop linen collections. Pine Cone Hill is introducing indoor/outdoor placemats that coordinate with their Dash and Albert rugs, and Bella Notte’s new line of antique chic tabletop linens are drop dead gorgeous.
